"[...] Recorded in early 1998 in Sahraui refugee camps in the Algerian desert, A Pesar De Las Heridas (Despite All Wounds) echoes with power, pain, anxiety, strength and beauty of the women's life experience.
Improvised piercing, fluid, meandering vocal lines and gutteral call-and-response sections are driven by percussion (most commonly the kettle drum-like "t'bal") and clapping/thumping. And then you've got the most wild Saharan electric and acoustic guitar or "tidinit" riffs.
Notable amongst many notable tracks are two diverse vocal styles: the soft, winsome charm of Aziza Brahim set against the frankly scary intensity of Mariem Hassan. [...]"

The voices of the Saharauis women transmiting the emotional charge accumulated in their many years of suffering in exile. The voices of Mariem Hassan, Teita Lebid and Hadhum Abeid transmit all the acumulated emotions in these years of suffer. More modern, cheerful and lighter but not less interesting are the young voices of Aziza Brahim, Serguela Abdi and Naha Salec. Between these two groups of women we have such esplendic singers as Embarec and Faknash Abeid. It is an album that respects their traditional music. The basic instruments used are the tindinit, the t´bal and electric and acustic guitars.
